Running a reach or community interaction campaign in TikTok Ads Manager alongside GMV Max will lift your impressions. It will usually not lift your sales. That is the honest answer, and it is not the one most Malaysian sellers are given.
The two campaign types are built for different jobs. Consideration objectives buy attention and are measured on impressions, cost per thousand and click-through. GMV Max buys revenue against a target return, which is how GMV Max works at its simplest. Adding the first does not make the second perform better, and the belief that it does costs shops budget every month.
What consideration ads actually change
A reach or community interaction campaign improves engagement-side numbers. Like rate goes up. Impressions go up. Profile visits and follows go up.
What tends not to move is the part that produces sales. In livestream terms, the number of people who actually enter the room, and the number who tap the yellow basket once they are in it. Those two are driven by the host and the structure of the live session far more than by how many people saw a video beforehand.
That is the gap. You buy more eyes, and the conversion machinery behind the eyes stays exactly as good or as bad as it was.
Where it does earn its place
There are cases where a consideration budget is worth running, and they are narrower than the pitch suggests.
Filling a livestream at the start of a session. The opening minutes of a live determine whether the algorithm gives you more of the room. A small delivery-weighted push in the first hour can matter when you are driving viewers into a livestream, provided the host can hold the viewers it brings. If the host cannot, you have paid to fill a room that empties.
When GMV Max will not spend and you need to move the account. A modest consideration allocation can be worth testing while you diagnose the real cause – which is usually the target or the creative pool rather than a lack of awareness.
Genuine brand building, funded as brand building. Upper-funnel work is legitimate, measured on attitudes and reach over a long horizon. What it is not is a lever to pull when this month’s sales are short.
In each case the allocation is small relative to conversion spend, and it is reviewed against session-level performance rather than left running.
The test to apply
Before adding a consideration campaign, ask what you expect to change and how you would know.
If the answer is “impressions”, fine – that is what it buys. If the answer is “sales”, be specific about the mechanism. Which step in the path from impression to purchase is currently the bottleneck, and does more attention actually relieve it?
Nine times out of ten the bottleneck is elsewhere. A weak listing, thin buyer feedback, a target set beyond what the creative can deliver, or a live host who cannot convert a room. None of those are fixed by buying more impressions, and all of them are cheaper to fix directly.
Sequencing does not create returns
A common belief in Malaysian seller groups is that running a reach or engagement campaign first, then switching to GMV Max, produces a better return – the first campaign having warmed the audience.
Treat that with scepticism. GMV Max builds its own signal from product and campaign data. Warming an audience with a consideration campaign does not hand it a better starting position, and the budget spent doing so was not spent on conversion.
If you want to test it, test it properly: same product, same period, one account with the sequence and one without. Anecdote in a group chat is not evidence, and sequencing claims are among the most commonly repeated and least often verified ideas in the market.
What to do instead
If sales are short and the instinct is to add a consideration campaign, work down the list that actually moves revenue first.
Is the creative pool large enough for GMV Max to select from? Is the target set where it can spend? Does the listing convert the traffic it already receives – description, photographs, buyer feedback? Can the live host hold a room?
Consideration budget sits below all four in priority. It is not useless. It is just rarely the constraint.
Common questions
Does a reach campaign help my live get more viewers?
It can raise impressions. Whether those become viewers who enter and stay depends on the session itself, which is where we would look first.
Should I split test it?
Yes, if you are going to run it at all. Same product, same window, one variable.
What share of budget if I do run one?
A minority of total spend, sized against sales rather than set as a fixed percentage, and reviewed against session-level performance rather than left in place.
We run paid social management for Malaysian brands and we would rather fix the constraint than sell you another campaign. Tell us the brand and the goal.
